The simple function of this device and set-up is pretty straightforward. The ATEN driver gets my data transfers done, so I haven't enough cause to delve further. I don't feel like testing this particular likely false positive on my own system, so I'm doing without learning whether I might get more use from the GUC232A's status light. On the other hand, it's a less general "detection" than those I more often see producing false positives. On the one hand, no other scanner detected such a thing, so it's likely a false positive. Quick Heal at VirSCAN reported "Trojan.Occamy". Submitting it to VirusTotal and VirSCAN turned up a few likely false-positive results and one more "interesting" result. I'd prefer visibility of data activity, so I downloaded GUC232A_ver_1.0.084.zip from IOGEAR's web site. That's the driver I've been using with good results, save one.Īt least with the ATEN driver, my GUC232A's status light doesn't flash for data transfers it just remains steadily lit so long as it's plugged into a "live" (powered up) USB port. This gave me an ATEN driver for some presumably-similar product. I then used Device Manager to open the GUC232A's Properties dialog and worked my way in to updating the (non)driver.

I decided to see what Windows Update would provide, so instead of downloading a driver installer from IOGEAR I just plugged the GUC232A in and observed Windows found no driver for it.

Garmin MapSource 6.1 works fine with the GUC232A under Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (at least using an ATEN driver see below), uploading and downloading data to and from GPS units just as if there were a built-in RS-232 serial port.ĭriver software raises questions. Those require a special serial cable (or at least connector), so cabling of a USB to RS-232 adapter need only be long enough to provide some strain relief (by preventing the entire three-connectors-plus adapter and cable hookup all prying together on your computer's USB port). I use it to work with older, serial-interface Garmin GPS navigators. May be just the thing if you need a USB to RS-232 adapter with just a short cable. Just below the COM port it asks for the baud rate, but I never did understand the point of that-especially since my purpose was to change the baud rate. The config software asks which COM port you are using, but the dropdown has no entries, so you must manually key in "COM5" for example. The config software was the only way that worked for me.Ĥ) The config software must connect with the adapter via Bluetooth. I don't know WHY, but that is what I had to do to make it save my changes-disconnect the serial data cable.ģ) One tech said to configure it with the config software, while another said to use the device Properties in Windows. In this case it had to be set to 9600 since that is the setup on the serial device.Ģ) While in setup mode, you cannot have a data cable attached, because if you do and you make setup changes using the config software, it will not save your changes. My barcode scanner said it was connecting at 57,600 baud, but the serial digital scale is set to 9600 baud.
